Stanley Bermudez
Bermudez, A former Lone Star College student and adjunct instructor re-examines the portrait using hard edge and a range of colors. This exhibit will be on display June 15 through July 8 with an opening reception June 23 from 12-2pm
Mr. Bermudez has been working on paintings of the human face and figure in basically three distinctive themes. The first theme is family members, the second theme is well known characters in world history, politics, literature, religion, and music, and the third theme is what he calls Neo-Catholic Imagery. He works with acrylics on canvas using a hard edge approach were he does not blend any colors. His process is very similar to the process that Roy Lichtenstein used, however the end result is very different. One striking characteristic of his paintings is the use of vibrant colors which he believes comes from growing up in Maracaibo, Venezuela and being exposed to the colors of the city, to Venezuelan folk art, to the work of the Guajiro Indians and there tapestries, as well as the work of Venezuelan contemporary masters like Carlos Cruz Diez and the late Jesus Soto. Viewers have found his paintings to be dynamic, vibrant, and funny, surrealistic at times, and with a Pop-Art quality to them at others, all of which are readings that he wants the work to have.
Mary Matteson-Parrish Art Gallery
The LSC-Montgomery art gallery was recenlty named to honor the tremendous efforts of Mary Matteson-Parrish on May 9. Matteson-Parrish’s commitment to improving access and enhancing the educational opportunities for citizens led to the growth of the college district boundaries to encompass from six to 11 independent school districts, and the expansion of services and facilities from three campuses to five comprehensive colleges: Lone Star College-North Harris, Lone Star College-Kingwood, Lone Star College–Tomball, Lone Star College–Montgomery and Lone Star College–CyFair.
Mary’s commitment to improving access and seamless systems for all citizens led to the establishment of seven satellite centers including the Carver Center located in Acres Homes and The University Center, a multi-institutional university teaching facility; and expanded outreach to students at all levels through partnerships with local school districts, universities, business and industry, chambers of commerce and other community and economic development organizations.
She has participated in and provided leadership and support for many civic, business, political and community development groups, including initiatives associated with the arts.
Mary was formerly the director of custom home sales for The Woodlands Development Company, and is a “pioneer” resident of The Woodlands. Her family was one of the first 25 families to move to The Woodlands in 1974. She is married to Norman Parrish.
